India is a country where women is regarded as goddess like Durga , Shakti , Kali and where objects are feminised and prayed like Earth as Dharti Mata , country as Bharat Mata and many more. But its an irony that in the same country, since ancient times Women is rejected and dejected. In Rig Veda ,there is a clear depiction about desire to have a male child. No desire is expressed for daughters, although cattle and children were demanded via hymns and prayers. According to historians of Alexander, girls were sold in the market place by poor parents during 600 B.C.Even today after several years nothing has changed. Position of a female is still undermined under male patriarchy ,only the ways to show it have changed.
A girl is raped every second , tortured every minute and even burned alive for raising her voice. She is questioned ,she is directed and has no right to oppose any wrong doings. She is immitated ,looked down upon ,restricted and bonded in chain. The recent rape cases of Nirbhaya , Kathua, Unnao and Hyderabad raises several questions on our part which needs to be dealt upon?
1) Why is a Girl's sexual identity not restricted to herself? Why is she considered a property of opposite sex? Why is she always forced to marry in the name of security? The solution proposed for any rape incident by Khap Panchayats and Male Dominated Justice Delivery Systems in villages ,is marriage with the accused. How can this give her a life of dignity? Can't she stay alone ,self independent without any male dominance on her whether it is physical or mental?
2) Why there is no distinction between a child and a female during such crimes? Has our society turned so desperate and deadly that they can't even differentiate between an adult and a kid? The Kathua rape victim was an 8 yr old girl child, Asifa Bano who was abducted and brutally raped and murdered.
3) Have we become so unworthy that we are unable to teach our boys the difference between voluntary sex and rape? Or have we failed to teach them the basic values like respect of females?
We need to find out the answers of these questions else we are a failure as a human race. It's so pityfull to see that we have transformed ourselves from civilised race to monsters .
Experts say that the demand of time is Speedy Judicial System with Fast track courts, Efficient patrolling and monitoring ,CCTV across every nook and corner . But all these are secondary. they will only work if we are able to teach the youth and males to shred their blind notions like :
"a boy never cries"
"males are superior than females"
"females are meant to listen to every direction of males"
and think beyond it.
They will only work if we mobilise our elders and females of the family to teach their boy child, each and every household work as their daughters,and not to distinguish work on the basis of sex.
They will only work if we teach our girls to be brave come forward and speak about every crime they face and not hide them into dungeons after these incidences,as many cases still go unnoticed.
More importantly the girls will speak about these issues only if they feel free and safe , only if our families create and open atmosphere for every child to come and speak anything and everything they want.
If we fail at this very moment,we will never be able to cope up for the loss.
As it is said in Hindi - "jab jaago tabhi savera"...it is high time we identify the criminals within us and deport them outside our very soul, to never bring them back. This will not only save the mankind from vanishing into pride of superiority but will ultimately save the most beautiful creation of God ..the Women.
Let's pray for her safety,health and well being . Let's teach our kids what still has not been taught. Let's protect us from getting extinct.
